Introducing Joe…
Joe has joined us for a post-grad placement for 3 months and has brought with him a wealth of experience in developing AI systems, with a particular interest in natural language processing and computer vision.
“I’m currently working with CircuitWorx on a Computer Vision project focused on automating PCB defect detection.
The goal is to develop a proof-of-concept Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) system that can identify missing, misaligned, or faulty components on circuit boards in real time. Using a Raspberry Pi camera module combined with image processing and YOLO-based object detection, the system captures and analyses boards directly on the production line.
Phase one focuses on creating a “golden board” reference model for comparison and generating a dataset of defects through image subtraction and augmentation. The next stage will introduce machine learning to classify defect types and improve generalisation across different board designs.
It’s been a great opportunity to apply AI and computer vision in a real-world manufacturing context — bridging the gap between research and production.”
At CircuitWorx, we offer a variety of placement, work experience, and internship opportunities throughout the year at our main office in West Dean.
A placement with us is a hands-on way to get involved in the full process of electronic product development — from early feasibility and design, working alongside our software and hardware engineers, through to prototyping and manufacture using the latest tools and technology. You’ll also gain valuable experience collaborating directly with clients, product designers, and suppliers.
We’re a small, friendly team, and we’ve kept in touch with many of our past interns — it’s great to see where their careers take them, and a few have even returned to join us full-time.
If you’re thinking ahead to 2026, drop us a message, we’d love to hear from you!
