If interoperability with other devices is not required products can be developed with their own bespoke wireless protocol using modules that communicate in one of the unlicensed 433MHz / 868MHz / 915MHz / 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific Medical bands.

Bespoke protocols have the advantage of being potentially simpler and faster to implement as the complexities of multi-layered generic protocols may not be necessary or appropriate for systems that require simple internal data transfers. Additionally a bespoke protocol tailored to a specific end-application may be more efficient as it can be designed without unnecessary overheads, although the communications would also typically be less secure unless a significant amount of development effort was invested in this aspect. The customised comms protocol approach also potentially reduces the development and manufacturing cost of a product as there is no requirement to licence logos or get certification approval.
