Parallel interfaces are typically used when fast data transfers are needed between different parts of an embedded system. For example, a high-resolution high-speed Analogue-to-Digital Converter (ADC) or Digital-to-Analogue Converter (DAC) running in real-time may need to pass a lot of data quickly to a digital signal processor (DSP) with little latency for audio or telephony applications. In this situation a serial protocol would often be too slow and a parallel connection could be used instead.
